Staying at an Airbnb

Staying at an Airbnb can be a great alternative to a hotel for people on a budget, as they can often be considerably cheaper (so be sure to compare prices before you book). If you aren’t massively interested in eating out and trying the local cuisine, you can save a lot of money by buying your food from the shops and cooking it at the Airbnb, something which isn’t usually an option at a hotel. (However, if you would like to try some of the local food, check out our top 3 sweet treats here). Additionally, it’s great for those who are planning to spend a good chunk of time at their accommodation (we always check for Wi-Fi and a TV as we love to relax and watch films in the evenings). If you want to see what kind of places we stay at when we go away check out our Instagram.

One of the things I really enjoy about Airbnb is the variety of places you can stay at, whether you prefer an entire property to yourself, or would rather rent a room and get to know the other people staying in the property. They also have a wide variety of locations so you can always be near whatever you want to see.

A top travel tip from us is to make sure you book far enough in advance as the best deals can often sell out early! If you want even more travel tips stay tuned for our upcoming article on our city break to Edinburgh.

A lot of people avoid Airbnb either because they feel it is less safe than a hotel or because they find it confusing. As safety is always a big concern for us, especially when far away from home, we tend to stay at at places owned by a Superhost. These are people who have been recognised as reputable and have excellent reviews, and it provides assurance that you can trust them.

As for being confusing, booking an Airbnb is as simple as selecting your dates and paying for your stay the same way you would do with a hotel. If you change your mind about your trip, you can cancel and receive a full refund even just a few days before your stay in many cases. A couple days prior to your arrival, you will receive detailed instructions on how to check in if the place you’re staying at has self check in, although if you still have questions, you can directly message (you may also have the option to call) your host. Alternatively, the host may meet you there and tell you about everything you need to know about the accommodation.

Airbnb isn’t just about finding a place to sleep, it’s also about creating memories and finding new experiences. If you’re interested in seeing life from a different perspective, you could book a unique stay at places ranging from farms and houseboats to treehouses and eco-friendly earth houses. As well as accommodation, you can also book activities such as a walking tour or a cooking class. Unfortunately, there are relatively few activities available in any given place, but you just might find something you truly adore.
